Distilled water has been boiled into steam and condensed back into liquid, leaving behind contaminants and impurities like chlorine and dissolved solids. Deionized (DI) water is also very pure, but it’s made differently: an ion-exchange process strips out the dissolved mineral ions (like calcium, magnesium, and sodium). Because deionization targets minerals rather than all contaminants, DI water is typically produced alongside another treatment — such as reverse osmosis — to ensure organic contaminants are removed too.
How Distilled Water Is Made
Distillation mimics the natural water cycle: water is heated to a boil, the steam rises away from dissolved solids, metals, and most contaminants, and the steam is condensed back into clean water. Because very few impurities can travel with the steam, distilled water is one of the purest forms of water you can produce at home or buy in a store.
How Deionized Water Is Made
Deionization passes water through resin beds that exchange mineral ions for hydrogen and hydroxide ions, which combine to form pure water. The process is fast and highly effective at removing minerals — which is why DI water is also called demineralized water — but on its own it does not remove bacteria, viruses, or uncharged organic compounds. That’s why labs and manufacturers usually pair deionization with reverse osmosis or another filtration stage.
The simplest way to remember the difference: distillation removes almost everything by turning water into steam; deionization removes the dissolved minerals by swapping ions. Both produce very pure water — by two very different routes.
Is Distilled or Deionized Water Safe to Drink?
Both are safe to drink in the short term. But because both processes remove the naturally occurring minerals — like calcium and magnesium — that give water its taste and contribute to your daily mineral intake, neither makes an ideal everyday drinking water. Long-term, most people are better served by water that is purified and still contains (or has re-added) healthy minerals.
What Should I Use Distilled Water For?
Even if you don’t drink it daily, distilled water earns its place around the house. Health equipment like CPAP machines and humidifiers runs more efficiently and stays cleaner with distilled water. Your steam iron (and your clothes) will benefit, it generally meets vehicle standards for car maintenance, and it’s often recommended for aquariums and houseplants.

Can you drink deionized water?
Yes, occasionally — DI water isn’t harmful to drink. But it lacks beneficial minerals, can taste flat, and unless it’s paired with another purification step it may still contain non-ionic contaminants. It isn’t designed to be drinking water.
Can I use distilled water instead of deionized water?
For most household uses (humidifiers, CPAP machines, irons), yes — distilled water is at least as pure. For laboratory or manufacturing specifications that call for DI water specifically, follow the specification.
Which is better for everyday drinking water?
